Piedmont quarterback Lucas Richert’s status for Friday remains unclear after he suffered a knee injury in last week’s scrimmage against Kingfisher.

Richert originally injured the knee last basketball season, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. The hope now is that it’s just a sprain.

“We don’t know for sure what the injury is,” Piedmont coach Drew Gossen said. “It’s looking like it may be as minor as a sprain and he’ll be back in no time or we’ll wait and see what he results are.”

Richert passed for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns last season. If he is unable to go, Gossen said the Wildcats will turn to senior Colby Bricker.

The injury adds pressure to an offense that returns sensenior wide receiver Steffen Funkhouser (6-3, 220 pounds), a player Piedmont coaches hope to get the ball to more this season.

“You are dumb if you don’t let him touch the ball 12-15 times a game,” Gossen said. “He’s definitely a big target. He’s got the speed to stretch the field. He’s just kind of a freak athlete when it comes down it.”

Piedmont lost all-state running back Darrius Burris to graduation and three running backs will carry the load in the backfield, junior Delbert Todd and sophomores Jacob Bakewell and Landon White.
