'Piggy Nation' premieres at Sooner Theatre in Norman
NORMAN — Tickets are on sale for Sooner The
The children's musical is adapted from Oklahoma author Richard Rosser's book “Piggy Nation: A Day at Work With Dad.”
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the theater, 101 E Main St. Tickets are $10 and available online at www.
The production will mark the Oklahoma and Southwest premiere. Directed and choreographed by Mat and Stephanie Govich, the musical features a cast of performers ages 8 to 13 and is appropriate for audiences of all ages.
“We are absolutely delighted to bring Richard's work to life at Sooner Theatre,” Executive Director Jennifer Baker said. “It's exciting for our students to have the opportunity to perform a new piece and to create their characters. The show has great lessons for all of us told in a way that really reaches children on their level.”
The musical, like the book, focuses on piggy behavior in an amusing, colorful update of the Golden Rule, Baker said.
The main character is a piglet named Sammy who joins his dad on “Piggy Patrol.” As they search the town for piggies, Sammy learns about rude behavior. The story has been adapted by Rosser into a full-length musical with 12 songs and a cast of 20.
Working with composer Alec Wells, Rosser has incorporated blues, zydeco, rock, rap and gospel music into the show.
