The district previously eliminated the sixth grade from three mid-high schools (Douglas, John Marshall and Oklahoma Centennial) and two middle schools (Taft and Roosevelt).
Four other middle schools — Belle Isle Enterprise, Jefferson, Rogers and Webster — still offer sixth grade and three will continue to do so for now because their feeder elementary schools are at capacity, district spokeswoman Tierney Tinnin said.
Rogers, in Spencer, is undergoing MAPS renovation, Tinnin said.
“Middle school is a big step up,” school board member Bob Hammack said. “I think the extra year in elementary school is probably beneficial emotionally, socially and academically.”
