Plans will proceed for a 750-space downtown garage south of city hall that will include 20,000-square feet of street-level retail and multiple floors on top for housing.
The project was given the green light Wednesday by the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority, which is overseeing the project in conjunction with the Central Oklahoma Transportation and Parking Authority.
Cathy O'Connor, director of the Urban Renewal Authority, told board members talks are ongoing with owners of the Hightower Building to include their surface parking lot as part of the project. She said the garage will likely be built immediately west of the Hightower Building at 105 N Hudson and immediately east of the city's finance building at 100 N Walker Ave.
“As our city continues to grow, we must continue to be proactive in development to assure we have the necessary infrastructure to support businesses,” O'Connor said. “The new parking garage allows us to plan for future expansion throughout downtown and gives the city additional mixed-use space to further our economic growth.”

A recent study performed by Walker Parking Consultants recommended the surface lots between Main Street and Colcord Drive as the top choice in the downtown area for conversion of a surface lot into a parking garage. The garage is being designed by TAP Architecture.
“With increasing numbers of downtown residents, workers and visitors, Oklahoma City has a need for additional parking,” O'Connor said. “Once developed, the parking garage will increase parking capacity in the core of downtown Oklahoma City and will help fill the need for additional parking.”
