Plaza Towers memorial to be finished this fall

by William Crum Published: August 21, 2014

A memorial to the seven children killed last year at Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore will be finished this fall.

Third-graders Sydney Angle, Antonia Candelaria, Emily Conatzer, Kyle Davis, Ja’Nae Hornsby, Christopher Legg and Nicolas McCabe were killed when a tornado destroyed the school on May 20, 2013.

The school has been rebuilt, and the new building opened Tuesday.

Robert Romines, the Moore schools superintendent, said the memorial is being installed at the front entrance of the new, $12 million building.

The memorial will include seven benches with hand carvings symbolizing the interests of the children who were killed, Romines said. Seven life-size silhouettes also will be part of the memorial, he said.

It will be ready about Oct. 1.

The children were killed when cement block walls collapsed as they huddled in a hallway. The new building has safe areas built to withstand winds of up to 250 miles per hour.
