Poetry Society of Oklahoma names youth poetry, art winners

Students were honored for their art and poetry in a contest sponsored by the Poetry Society of Oklahoma

The Poetry Society of Oklahoma sponsored the Oklahoma Lore Youth Poetry and Art Contest, open to Oklahoma students in grades 1 through 12. This year, 357 students entered, and the awards ceremony was held April 21 at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany.

Students in each grade wrote poems about a designated Oklahoma emblem, symbol, or tradition.

Taylor Gage, of Tecumseh, a student at Bethel Public Schools, was the winner of the primary division with her poem, “Bullfrogs, Bullfrogs.”

Autumn Franklin, of Norman, an Irving Middle School student, was named poet laureate for the elementary division with the poem “Oklahoma Rose.”

Cedric Newkirk, of Lawton, and a student at Tomlinson Middle School was named mid-high poet laureate for “Homage to Our Flag.”

Samantha Ciaramitaro, of Lawton, a student at Lawton High School, was named senior high poet laureate for her poem “Blanket.”

Aeynn Hanning, a ninth-grader at Mustang Mid-High, won first place in the art division. Other winners were Jenny Nguyen, Mustang Mid-High, second place; Kennedy Walls, seventh-grader at Union City Schools, third place; and Destini Martin, ninth-grader at Mustang Mid-High, fourth place.

The purpose of the art contest is to illustrate the cover of the student anthology.

Judges were members of the Poetry Society of Oklahoma, Rob Burgess, D. Walker and Peggy Poteet.
