Saturday will largely be a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the 1988 season, where Barry Sanders ran his way to the Heisman. But there’s also a football game to be played, as Oklahoma State takes on Kansas in the Cowboys’ last “easy” game before closing the regular season against Texas, Baylor and Oklahoma.
Really neat column from Berry Tramel about 1988 students who saw Barry Sanders’ magical run to the Heisman first-hand.
Here are some more student memories of Sanders’ Heisman season.
Josh Stewart played some running back against Texas Tech. With his production dipping since the QB switch, is that an example of OSU getting its best playmakers the ball in any way possible?
Our staff picks for the game. Shocker: We all think it’s going to be a blowout.
Will the offense put together back-to-back strong performances?
The Cowboys were — finally — both balanced and explosive against Texas Tech. Does that show this unit has turned a corner just in time for a difficult stretch run? Kansas’ defense is actually pretty good, particularly at cornerback. Still, putting together a second consecutive all-around performance would be a great sign.
What will the Cowboy secondary look like?
OSU was without two key pieces of its secondary for a chunk of the Texas Tech game due to injury, as starting cornerback Kevin Peterson did not make the trip and Shamiel Gary left the contest. Who’s back there today?
More “special” teams?
The Cowboys have gotten a barrage of big special teams plays this season, including Derek Branson’s blocked punt and Stewart’s big return against the Red Raiders. Is this a game where Justin Gilbert finally breaks free on a kickoff return? Is this a chance for Ben Grogan to get some quality work? Something tells me he’s going to be relied on to make an important kick in the last three games.
Uniform prediction: Black helmet (Pistol Pete logo), gray jersey, black pants
This is if the Cowboys don’t do some sort of 1988 throwback look. We have to see gray at some point…don’t we?
Final score prediction: OSU 56, Kansas 13
