Police arrest 10 at sobriety checks during weekend

NORMAN — Norman police arrested 10 people at two sobriety checkpoints on the Labor Day weekend during the national law enforcement campaign "Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest.”

Eight arrests were on driving under the influence complaints, including two drivers who were under the legal drinking age.

Officers conducted their first checkpoint from 12:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday in the 300 block of 12th Avenue NE. Police said 332 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which yielded five arrests on driving under the influence complaints. One of the drivers arrested was 17; another was 19. A sixth driver was arrested on two outstanding warrants and one was ticketed on a transporting an open container of alcohol complaint.

The second checkpoint was in operation from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at 156th Avenue NE and Little Axe Drive, which had 436 vehicles pass through it. Police said three drivers were arrested on driving under the influence complaints and another was arrested on a driving with a revoked driver's license complaint.

One person at the second checkpoint was givenn a minor in possession of alcohol ticket.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration organized the national crackdown on drunk driving that combined high-visibility enforcement with heightened public awareness.

Last year in Oklahoma, alcohol was involved in 5,442 crashes, including 148 fatal vehicle crashes and 2,692 injury crashes.
