The Kilpatrick Turnpike near the Oklahoma and Canadian county line was temporarily shut down Thursday night after a vehicle Oklahoma City police officers were chasing caused a grass fire.

Oklahoma City police officers tried to serve a felony warrant in an RV park at 700 S Rockwell Ave. A man noticed police, got into a recreational vehicle and drove away, police Capt. Dee Patty said.

The vehicle, which ran over several tire shredders, drove west on Interstate 40 to the Kilpatrick Turnpike and intentionally drove off into a ravine near County Line Road, Patty said. The pursuit ended about 8:30 p.m.

Because the vehicle continued to drive at a fast speed after the vehicle’s front tires blew out, sparks from the vehicle’s rims caused a grass fire nearby. This prompted the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to shut down the turnpike for about 45 minutes, authorities reported.

The male driver was arrested on complaints related to the pursuit. The female passenger has not been arrested at this time, Patty said.
