William “Alfalfa Bill” Murray’s cheese-and-crackers campaign of 1930 may be the ultimate in low-budget politicking.

Murray had returned to Oklahoma from Bolivia in late 1929. Dead broke, without prospects, he borrowed $40 and got himself elected governor.
