The new name should be the oklahoma city REDMEN,due to all the oklahoma tribes that are in oklahoma.
Jeff- the Knights is a terrible name.
Why not pick a name with some significance, and do a logo and them around that.
Why the hell would they be called the knights here in OKC?
It's amusing to read the comments from former Sonics fans in the Great Northwest. It seems that the sour grapes that they are eating has them trying to put evil spells on the new team in OKC. Hey guys, that doesn't work...
the Lights, the Gamblers, the High Rollers, the Aces, the Black Jacks, the Sinners, the Area 51ers... all fitting names as the franchise will eventually be moved to Las Vegas anyways. And YOU will be left footing the bill.
Robber Barons and Outlaws condemns you to a lifetime of being "the team that was stolen from Seattle." So those could work. Energy, T-birds, Thunder, Twisters all sound like WNBA or minor league baseball teams. No merchandise will be sold outside of OKC.
I guarantee the name has already been chosen. Revel in your fantasy names and colors, enjoy this while you can.
Remember, this is not your team.
This is Clay Bennet's team and he will do with it whatever he wills.
Enjoy the team while you can, this is not a permanent thing. This is a business. Clay Bennett approached this aquistion, from the get go, as a businessman not as a fan. Your comments, concerns, dedication, fanatisism or anything else does not matter. Only your money, directly from your pockets and/or through forced municipal, county or state taxes are all that matter.
He is a businessman, he owns a business and he has placed it in an area that is starving for a pro team. He will take as much of your money while he can. After the newness wears off and your team suffers from years of poor managerial decisions, your star players leave for more lucrative contracts available in bigger markets, your team is perrenially fighting to stay out of the division (or league) basement, as fan enthusiasm wanes, attendance drops, profits turn into losses and the realization that you've been taken for a ride by a savvy businessman sets in, the team will be sold and/or moved.
Remember this is about making money not pleasing the fans. I know, I've seen it happen... After 41 years in Seattle, the SuperSonics are gone.
Remember, as Clay Bennett moves "HIS" team from Seattle to Oklahoma City, he will see the lights of Las Vegas.
M, I am sorry, but when i think of BARONS, i think of little, stuffy, whiny europeans w/ butlers and monocles. OKC has got Nicholls Hills and its snooty ways, but the MAJORITIES of Okies sure ain't BARON-quality.
I like Barons or Outlaws. Let's embrace the b.s., one-sided, national coverage OKC is getting. OKC Thunder absolutely blows! Please NO to Thunder! Sounds like a little league girls soccer team!
The name of the team was leaked out during the broadcast of "Around the Horn" on ESPN yesterday. One of the panelist said that the name would be the thunder or the barrons when he was commenting on the team. He was not affliated with the sonics and he could have better contacts in the NBA that I think he is correct.
Matthew, I happen to know that in the Tulsa, Owasso, Catoosa, Skiatook, Vera, and Ochelata area there are approximately 954,709 people so Nathan wasn't really too far off -- given that they are procreating in Skiatook like rabbits we should hit that million mark by October. Does this mean we get an NBA team too??? Please reply back, your friend Jerry.
Look Jim, I love Del City like the next guy, but Roughnecks is SOCCER and TULSA -- the BARONS are what Hitler removed when he took over in 1933. The OKC VICTIMS is the best name for America's greatest state. And Del City is the best City bar none -- Go EAGLES and John Smith!
Roughnecks? Sorry Tobin old boy, but NO johnny-come-lately NBA team comes and just takes the illustrious name of the 1983 NASL Soccer Bowl Champs! No sirree -- Billy Caskey and Njego Pesa will see to it as well! That would just make Imhofe's day!
I really like the Oklahoma Roughnecks. Represents some of Oklahoma's history, caters to some corporate sponsors, and just sounds pretty cool. That's my personal favorite. I also think it should be "Oklahoma" rather than "Oklahoma City." Either way, I'm extremely excited and can't wait for the season.
OKC Barons.
Nathan, you're wrong. It needs to be OKC because the people of Oklahoma City need to be given credit for approving a self-imposed tax for the Ford Center improvements. Not to mention Mayor Cornett and the OKC City Council.
Don't be stupid OKC...name the team the Oklahoma "something". Give the whole state a sense of ownership, and they'll show up and support more. You'll need it after the newness wares off. You'll get the city sales tax and all that, no problem...so don't get in a tiff over "well we paid for it", "we did the Ford Center", yada yada yada. Ditch the "City" in the name, and it will be so much better long term. I'm telling ya... Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies/Avalanche, Florida Marlins, Texas Rangers, Indiana Pacers, New Jersey Nets, Carolina Panthers...no one thinks those teams made a bad decision. And they have their full states support. Don't ostracize Tulsa, or you'll lose them (1 million+ in their metroplex, fyi). Makes the $250 in gas/tolls/food/parking/tickets easier to pay for a game for Tulsa folks if they feel ownership in the team.
Oklahoma Rattlers. My son has drawn a cool design that incorporates the rattlesnake. I just hope and pray it is not the Thunderbirds or the TWISTERS! I would be appalled if Twisters became the name. I mean really...after May 3rd why in the heck would it even be a consideration?
By the way, we should be Oklahoma, not Oklahoma City. I want the whole state behind us including Tulsa. This should be the whole state's team. Also, can you think of another team with City in the name? Salt Lake City Jazz? New York City Knicks? Sounds stupid.
Come on. Needs to be Barons with the Black and Gold jerseys. Great colors and original name. Energy is a MLS name and Twisters/Tornadoes represents something bad about Oklahoma. It would be like calling the Hornets the Floods. Love Outlaws too, but may not be politically correct these days.
The Oklahoma Ciy Thunderbirds is a natural fit. Not only does it honor Oklahomas' Native American heritage, it also pays tribute to the outstanding men and women who make up Oklahomas' National Guard unit, the 45th Infantry 'Thunderbird' Division.
Oklahoma City Boomers. Colors: Turquoise, yellow and black. Reference to the mountain boomer lizard (mascot) and "boomers" from the land acquistions which settled Oklahoma.
The name and whole scheme is likely a done deal. If I had my choice, it'd be Thunderbirds -- a way to honor the heroes of the 45th Infantry and our Native heritage at the same time. My guess is that it's the Barons.
My picks, in order of preference: 1) Oklahoma Thunderbirds 2) Oklahoma Twisters 3) Oklahoma Outlaws 4) Oklahoma Thunder 5) Oklahoma Engergy 7) Oklahoma Stampede 8)Oklahoma City Slickers By the way, I still feel strongly that the team should represent the state and not the city. Unfortunately the team's contract with the Ford Center doesn't allow that.
OKC Energy! An ode to the oil, natural gas, and energy sectors that are a part of Oklahoma's past and future. Colors, blue, orange, and white. Logo is a radiating basketball. Can play "Pure Energy" when team comes out.
I think we should give Seattle a nod, especially since their very vocal minority has been so gracious with their comments regarding OKC. So, with that....
OKC Lattes
OKC Starbucks
OKC Espresso
Seriously, this sucks for the fans of Seattle. It does. Some of them have decided to hate on Oklahomans (if only they'd just focus their venom on Sally Kern and Bobbi Burbridge Lane.....), which is not cool.
Names? OKC Roughnecks
Very cool, different name......and after all, it's oil money buying this....
Gary at least you get something out of that tax. If you really hate taxes that much you should look at how the federal govt spends your taxes on programs that benefit nobody.
No, they won't leave in 5 years, because we are so incredibly gullible that we approve every tax they ask for. As if those guys needed more money... How can the Oklahoman even report on this honestly when the editor is the team owner's brother in law? No, they'll stay, we'll pay. We'll all pay, whether we like basketball or not. And they'll make a killing off of us.
Drew, I agree with you Thunder sounds like a name from the CREATE A TEAM feature on NBA LIVE video game or something. Plus whats the mascot for Thunder?
These names suck. Twisters? How gay is that. Maybe tornadoes but not twisters. No bird names either. What is a thunderbird? The only thunderbirds that I know of are the junky cars and the casino.
I hate these polls. Bennett and Co. has had the new name, colors, logo, etc., since long before he offered the first settlement to Seattle in February.

I think there happen to be a few more fortune 500 companies in the Emerald City, as well as 2 other pro franchises.
I believe they have professionals called "graphic designers" who might be better suited for this gig.
