A group of local Scouts is expressing its thanks to the troops in a unique way — with lots of popcorn.

Phil Pippin, leader of Boy Scout Troop 193, said his Scouts and those in Webelos Pack 5 are sending $8,000 worth of popcorn overseas.

Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs sell cans of popcorn, along with other items, as part of ongoing fundraising efforts. Pippin said the boys in his troop decided to raise money to send popcorn to military personnel as part of their normal fundraising.

He said it took about a month for the boys to raise enough money to buy 86 cases, or about 1,000 cans of the Scout popcorn, which will be sent overseas in coordination with the Blue Star Mothers of America.

Pippin said a large portion of the money for the popcorn was given by anonymous donors who wanted to do something nice for U.S. soldiers.
