DURANT (AP) — George Washington famously couldn't tell a lie — and neither could an Oklahoma man who recently returned a portrait of the first president swiped from an elementary school some 40 years ago.

The portrait, painted on a felt-like cloth, was taken from George Washington Elementary School in Durant after high school graduation in 1969 or 1970. According to the Durant Daily Democrat, a group of teens stole the painting and tried to set it on fire. A man says he rescued the artwork from his classmates then stashed it in a dresser drawer for decades.

The newspaper says the man, who wishes to remain anonymous, recently gave the painting to a friend who brought it to the Three Valley Museum.

The museum says the painting will soon be displayed.
