NewsOK Sports 10:14 a.m. Welcome to a Fourth of July edition of the Power Lunch chat. NewsOK Sports intern Cody Stavenhagen will be talking OSU sports, as well as the U.S. Senior Open and Dorial Green-Beckham on today's chat. Get your questions in here and Cody will be on at 11 a.m.
NewsOK Sports 11:00 a.m. Happy Fourth of July everyone. It's a beautiful day in America. Thanks for joining. Let's get this show going.
CowboysRFF 11:00 a.m. Will DGB play in 2014 for OU? If not, will he stick around for 2015?
NewsOK Sports 11:04 a.m. As OU beat writer Jason Kersey wrote about in today's paper, there's no NCAA waiver rule that easily fits DGB's case. People have mentioned the "run off" exemption Oklahoma State basketball used with Anthony Hickey, but that requires a player leaving a program "for reasons beyond the control of the student-athlete." I feel like DGB's problems were very much in his control, and even with Missouri's support, the NCAA would have grounds to deny that waiver. Some disagree, but I don't see him playing in 2014. Off that, I think he would have more to gain by sticking around and playing in 2015. Get his name back out there, get his draft stock up. He is good enough to be a first-round pick if he gets his head on straight. Leaving without ever playing at OU wouldn't do him much good, unless he is just deadset on going pro.
CowboysRFF 11:04 a.m. RE: troubled athletes...thoughts on why Devon Thomas hasn't been dismissed from OSU football team?
NewsOK Sports 11:06 a.m. Seems to be a formality to let the legal process play out a little bit before axing the kid completely. As of early this week, he is still not working out with the team. That likely won't change. Chances are Thomas is done at OSU, but Gundy and Co. are taking their time before making it official.
OSU Orange 11:06 a.m. Will Mason Rudolph run home to Mama like Wes Lunt if he doesn't get to start this year?
NewsOK Sports 11:09 a.m. Surely not. Rudolph has heard comparisons to Lunt from all angles. I'm sure OSU coaches even talked with him about that situation while recruiting him. Rudolph should know what he's getting into. All indications are J.W. Walsh will start this year (thought that doesn't mean he'll finish). Best case scenario for Mason is taking over at some point this season. Worst case is redshirting, backing up Walsh in 2015 then going on to be a three-year starter. That's pretty good in my mind, and likely his, too. Lunt got stuck in a bad situation, and wanted out for reasons that went beyond the field. Shouldn't be the case with Rudolph.
Ruben Edmond 11:10 a.m. Thoughts on our basketball team this year? Saw a lot of new faces but one person that has stood out to me is the Newberry kid. Where's he from?
NewsOK Sports 11:12 a.m. Getting a lot of OSU basketball questions. I'll start with this from Ruben.

OSU might not be as bad as the fanbase seems to be making it out. Still a lot of really good players on this team Le'Bryan Nash could have a huge year. Addition of Anthony Hickey from LSU is crucial.
Like last year, the Cowboys might be their own worst enemies. Get things right in the locker room and off the court, and no reason this team can't go to the tournament, maybe even win a game. But that's best case.
Plenty of new guys. Newberry is from New Mexico Junior College. More on him coming.
Johnny Newman 11:12 a.m. Your thoughts on Jeff Newberry? I recently saw him in 2 team pick up sessions and a team workout and he looked dominant and as if he was going to be doing mostly everything from scoring to creating for this team this year. Has a somewhat flashy game but doesn't turn the ball over much from what I saw. JUCO highlights are impressive. I think we have us a potential replacement in Smart
NewsOK Sports 11:15 a.m. Great question Johnny. I've yet to see him play in person, but keep hearing good things about him. Travis Ford said he has been extremely impressive. He seems to be a mature kid with a versatile game. He will play, and he should play well. But comparing him to Smart is unfair. There's a difference between playing well in summer practice and being an All-American. Newberry will likely take some time to adjust, and he'll have to find his role with this team. No doubt he will be a capable guard, though.
ra 11:15 a.m. What will the starting lineup be for osu basketball
NewsOK Sports 11:20 a.m. ra: That's the million dollar question, and Travis Ford told me a couple of weeks ago he's still doesn't know. It will take some time to sort out all the new guys, but it could go a couple of ways:
Hickey/Forte/Hammonds/Nash/Cobbins ... something like that.
Hickey and Newberry will be fighting for that PG spot. The loser will likely play a combo guard role. Then the question is whether that will be off the bench or starting at the two. OSU still needs help inside, which should mean Nash staying at PF and Cobbins at C. Leaves Leyton Hammonds at SF unless someone else really impresses.
CowboysRFF 11:21 a.m. The defense will need a first year guy to contribute. Who are the most likely candidates?
NewsOK Sports 11:23 a.m. It will have to be a linebacker. A freshman will likely start outside. I'd say Gyasi Akeem from Broken Arrow or Josh Mabin from Klein Oak in Texas. Also keep an eye out for Chris Hardeman in the secondary.
CowboysRFF 11:23 a.m. Same for offense. Who's the most likely player to contribute in their first season?
NewsOK Sports 11:24 a.m. Tyreek Hill, no doubt.
