Sooners chat with Jason Kersey: Striker's new role, impact freshmen and Kendal Thompson's decision

by Jason Kersey Published: March 28, 2014
NewsOK Sports 10:05 a.m. The Sooners talk will get started in about an hour with Jason Kersey. Get your questions in now.
Lee 11:00 a.m. Jason, do you think the sooners use of Striker at nickel back this spring is just to get his coverage skills better or are they really planning on using their best pass rusher as a corner?
Jason Kersey 11:01 a.m. Lee: They're definitely not going to use him as a corner. Coaches say this move is designed to ensure that the best 11 players are on the field, and to help Striker get more pass rushing opportunities than he had last season. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen but I wouldn't expect to see him NOT rushing the passer next year
Oksooner 11:03 a.m. Good morning how does ou spring practice look so far, and with all that's going on at northwestern is any of that stuff going to effect the big 12
Jason Kersey 11:06 a.m. I couldn't tell you how spring practice looks because we aren't allowed to watch it, but the coaches say it's going great! (Of course). I think the Northwestern stuff and allowing the players to unionize could absolutely affect the Big 12 and the entire college football landscape.
Joel 11:06 a.m. What 3 newcomers will make the biggest impact this year for OU? I'm thinking Joe Mixon will be one for sure.
Jason Kersey 11:08 a.m. Joe Mixon, Michiah Quick and Steven Parker would be my three picks.
Carter 11:09 a.m. Is Trevor Knight more confident now?
Jason Kersey 11:10 a.m. I don't think there's any question about that. Now that he's definitely the guy, he can speak a little louder and with a little more authority
Norm 11:11 a.m. Is there anyway Blake Bell can be the starting TE in fall? Is he doing anything to impress in camp?
Jason Kersey 11:13 a.m. There's a chance, definitely. It sounds like Bell is doing well through practices so far, but I think Taylor McNamara will have just as good a chance to start.
Crimson Jesus 11:13 a.m. I'm partial to Striker as the best OU player, but I can see Shepard. I think Phillips would be a No. 1 type if he was healthy.
Jason Kersey 11:16 a.m. Phillips definitely played well early in the season. It should be really interesting to see how he comes back from that injury next season
MP 11:17 a.m. What have you heard about Knight throwing the ball this spring? I know coaches blow smoke but is there anything being whispered? He was good in the SB but I want to see consistency.
Jason Kersey 11:18 a.m. I haven't heard anything to suggest he isn't throwing the ball really well this spring. The Sugar Bowl performance is what coaches always thought Knight was capable of, so there's no reason to believe he can't carry that over into next season
Smokestack Lightning 11:18 a.m. Have not heard anything lately about Quincy Russell. Is he still on the team and any chance he can get into the rotation at defensive tackle this coming season??
Jason Kersey 11:21 a.m. It is interesting to think how he was viewed as some kind of savior when he arrived on campus last fall. He's still on the roster, but because he played last year, he couldn't redshirt and is a senior. I guess there's always a chance that he could get into the rotation, but between Jordan Phillips and Jordan Wade, I don't see him making a huge impact
Rad Brad 11:21 a.m. OU's basketball season in three words ... GO
Jason Kersey 11:21 a.m. Great, then disappointing ..?
Guest 11:22 a.m. Jason Kersey do you think you and your buddy aber will be able to make it all the way through the half marathon?
Jason Kersey 11:23 a.m. I think we'll make it! It'll definitely be an interesting experience
Andrew R. 11:23 a.m. Is Charlie Strong for real? What do you think about what he's doing in Texas?
Jason Kersey 11:26 a.m. I think it was a great hire, and he's certainly making some interesting changes down there. I also think it'll take a year or two for him to really get things going, but Texas could be a force before too long
Brad 11:26 a.m. Is Corey Nelson working out to try to play in the NFL? Haven't heard much about him lately...
Jason Kersey 11:27 a.m. Corey worked out at pro day and did pretty well, and is still chasing his NFL dream. I wrote about him the day before pro day. You can read that article here:
Joey 11:28 a.m. Do you think Kendal Thompson made a good decision going to Utah?
Jason Kersey 11:30 a.m. Sure. There wasn't going to be any opportunity for him to ever really play at OU, so I definitely think he made the right choice by going elsewhere. Utah's QB situation is a little murky right now, so there's an opportunity for Kendal to step in and make an impact.
