Prep football: Doctor, Washington topple El Reno

BY LARRY LEWIS Published: November 30, 2008
SAND SPRINGS — Michael Doctor scored on two touchdown runs and had another strong performance at linebacker to lead Tulsa Washington past El Reno 28-7 Saturday afternoon in the Class 5A state football semifinals at Memorial Stadium.

Doctor broke tackles on touchdown runs of 18 and 25 yards en route to 133 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Quarterback Eric Bennett scored on runs of 1 and 18 yards. Bennett led all rushers with 139 yards on 22 carrries. He completed 8 of 20 passes for 102 yards.

"They’re big and strong, and we had a hard time matching up with them,” El Reno coach Tom Cobble said. "They gave us a few turnovers, and we weren’t able to take advantage of them, and that’s kind of the way the game went.”

El Reno went from 3-7 last season to 10-3 this fall.

"We had a great run. We’re really proud,” said Cobble.

Tulsa Washington contained explosive playmakers, quarterback Jakeil Everheart and running back Cory Dauphin, for most of the game.

Tulsa Washington led 14-0 at halftime on a sneak by Bennett with 42 seconds left in the first quarter and a spinning 18-yard touchdown run by Doctor with 4:47 left in the second.

"We’ve been able to limit Michael (Doctor) to about 10 carries per game throughout the season to keep him fresh for the end of the season, and because he is so important for us on defense as well,” said Tulsa Washington coach Antwain Jimmerson.

Doctor, who has orally committed to Oregon State, said: "The key was our line opening up big holes all game. Our lines on both sides were able to control the game.”
