Putnam City North has two tough home games that will determine its district standing over the next two weeks. The Panthers (5-1 overall, 2-1 district) play fellow heavyweights Edmond Santa Fe (5-1, 2-1) on Thursday, and then Mustang (6-0, 3-0) on Friday, Oct. 24. PC North and Santa Fe are quite similar statistically, which should make for a hardfought District 6A-1 game. “We’re a lot alike,” PC North coach Bob Wilson said. “Both teams run really well, and both teams are pretty physical.” Both teams have stud running backs that average eight yards per carry — Putnam North’s Josh Booker and Edmond Santa Fe’s Randy Ponder — and both teams are coming off blowout wins over Moore teams. Putnam North beat Moore, 42-7, and Edmond Santa Fe beat Southmoore, 72-12, on Friday.

EL RENO FIRED UP OVER VICTORY
El Reno is still reeling from its 31-14 upset of Class 5A’s secondranked Lawton MacArthur on Friday night. “It was incredible,” El Reno coach Tom Cobble said. “This is as big a win and as big an upset as I’ve seen.” Lawton MacArthur was missing several starters, though. Senior running back and defensive back Javon Harris, an OU commitment, was out for the loss and is questionable for this week’s game against Duncan. Also, preseason All-State lineman Stetson Burnett is out for three weeks and will have his knee scoped. Senior wide receiver and free safety Norris Wrenn is out with an ankle sprain, and center and defensive end Roland Baza broke his leg on the first series in Friday’s loss.
SCHOOL POINTS RECORDS BROKEN
Two city-area teams broke school records for points scored in a game last week. Edmond Santa Fe broke its record in a 72-12 win over Southmoore on Friday night. The Wolves’ previous record was 64, set in 2006 against U.S. Grant. Crooked Oak set its mark in its 83-0 win over Riverside, breaking the previous record of 76, which was set in a 2001 win over Mount St. Mary.
WESTMOORE SEEKS WEEKLY IMPROVEMENT
Westmoore is 2-4 on the season after a 24-14 win over Putnam City West on Friday, and the Jaguars still have a chance at making the Class 6A playoffs. The key, coach Mike Whaley said, is improving every week. “More than anything else, we’re just trying to get better each week,” Whaley said. “We’re gonna keep trying to improve, and hopefully we’ll get to play Game 11.”
