HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — More than 11,000 acres will be burned at Everglades National Park in Homestead.

The prescribed burn is planned for Thursday in the East Everglades District of the park. One helicopter, two wild land fire engines, three airboats and a single engine air tanker will be on hand to help the 25 firefighters.

The planned burn area is about 11,254 acres in size. Authorities say that depending on weather patterns, smoke may be visible in the eastern portion of the park. Roadways should not be impacted.

A park statement says controlled burns are an important part of resource management at Everglades National Park.
