The University of Oklahoma’s Harold Hamm Diabetes Center is launching a prize program university officials hope will encourage researchers to continue to seek a cure for diabetes.
OU President David Boren and Oklahoma oilman Harold Hamm announced the creation of the Harold Hamm International Prize for Research in Diabetes Thursday at the opening of the American Diabetes Association’s 72nd Scientific Sessions in Philadelphia.
The program will award a $250,000 prize every two years to a researcher, team of researchers or institution working toward producing a cure for diabetes. Recipients will be chosen by a jury of leaders in the field of diabetes, and will be awarded on the basis of scientific merit.
“This disease is spreading all over the world. It’s an epidemic,” Boren said. “The announcement of the Harold Hamm International Prize for Research in Diabetes is an important milestone in the fight to find a cure for millions around the world that are suffering from this disease.”
