In response to Cal Hobson (Your Views, July 6): Wouldn't it be a giant leap forward if politicians would tell us the truth, unadulterated by spin, bloviation, omission of relevant facts, etc.? Hobson listed reasons for accepting and using the new health care act and committed some of the listed sins. “The 250 million Americans who currently have health insurance can keep it,” he wrote. “No questions asked.” How about asking, and answering, how many companies will drop their involvement and payments toward their employees' health insurance? How about asking, and answering, how many doctors will avoid involvement with the new law by retiring or not accepting its coverage? Or is that against the law? “You can no longer be denied health coverage for pre-existing conditions ...” Does anyone really believe that insurance companies will, or should, simply provide this coverage without raising rates? This rate increase would in effect be a tax on the middle class!
Or is this another of those cases where the federal government tells insurance companies that they must provide it free, like their mandate to provide contraceptives free even when the client, the payer of the premium, is a religious organization that conscientiously objects? “The federal government will pay the full cost …” of the new Medicaid coverage, Hobson wrote. When Uncle Sam pays, that's you and me paying taxes. Another tax increase? As always, this tax money will be flushed through the Washington bureaucracy, which always wastes a significant portion of it.
