Proposed bridge over I-40 promises to catch eyes

A proposed 18-story-tall "SkyDance Bridge” could span the new Interstate 40 Crosstown Expressway pending Oklahoma City Council approval of designs chosen in an unprecedented competition.

Laura Story, assistant city engineer with the city, confirmed Monday the competition was a first for Oklahoma City and attracted firms that designed the Sydney Opera House and Boston's Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge. The winning team is led by Hans Butzer, who designed the Oklahoma City National Memorial, and Stan Carroll, who has won accolades for his work with metal sculptures and architecture.

"Bridge architecture is one of the great building types out there,” Carroll said. "My whole life I've really wished I could design a bridge.”

Butzer cautioned against drawing comparisons between the iconic memorial and the proposed I-40 bridge.

"Hopefully, we'll never have to build another memorial,” Butzer said.

"But I'd like to see the city commissioning more bridges like this. Just look at the Thunder coming to Ford Center. You can't place a value on pride,” he said.

Flycatcher-inspired
Carroll said the bridge is inspired by the "skydance” of the scissor-tailed flycatcher, the state bird. The design, meanwhile, calls for oil piping and other local materials to ensure the project stays within its $5 million budget, which consists of funding from the city and state.

The designers hope the bridge, which will link two parks proposed as part of Core to Shore redevelopment, will be a destination, as well as a pathway. They envision it as a place where couples will share their first kiss in its shadows while long-lost friends will choose to meet at its bend. They hope marathon runners will raise their arms in victory while passing under its wings.

The design calls for two lighting systems — traditional up-lighting that would show off the bridge at night, and a translucent material on the faces of the bridge sculpture wings that would cause them to glow from within.

Mayor Mick Cornett said he's happy with all the submittals but cautioned he would like to add Oklahoma City's name.

"The people who are going to see this bridge are those who have already decided not to stop in this city,” Cornett said. "And maybe after seeing this, the next time through they will stop.”

I love the design and hope we do see it built. I wish we put this type of artestry and effort in all of our projects. Its sad to see new projects just keep going with the same drab construction methods. I Maybe this will spur some creativity in new buildings and bridges in the state!

Mayor Cornett loves OKC and his intent is not to distract from but to add to the image we all want others to have about this emerging metropolis, that said I know where he's coming from but agree with the masses, leave Oklahoma City off the SKYDANCE BRIDGE, it'll attract attention to the city and it's self just being a awesome bridge.

Simply Beautiful!!! Approve and build this bridge NOW!!!!!!! As for the "Oklahoma City", I echo others who have said adding the words to the bridge to 'announce' OKC is un-necessary and quite tacky. Like was said, people will know they are in Oklahoma City and this will become one of the MANY new ICONs of the new progressive URBAN paradise known as Oklahoma City! I see this along the same lines as Millennium Park in Chicago - brilliant!

Beautiful! This is just another step in bringing more recognition, more people to OKC -- doesn't need any name on it, it is very cool, and I hope the City Council approves it. It would be a design that would bring instant recognition to OKC.

I like Mick...but, Mick...stay out of the design business, buddy. I am pretty sure the folks driving through on I-40 know where they are. If they don't, then we don't want these disoriented souls stopping anyway. The design by the designers looks cool.

I agree, Doug. The name 'Oklahoma City' doesn't need to be put on the pedestrian bridge, for that would detract from it. It's my understanding that the words 'Oklahoma City' are going to be included in the adjoining retaining walls on each side of the new highway and therefore, it's not needed again on the bridge. People already know where they are.

Nice. That's some originality and uniqueness that we need to stand out. Have more identity than before.

I'm a Mayor Mick fan, but I surely hope from your report, Steve, that he wouldn't think of defacing this beautiful edifice by putting Oklahoma City's name on it somehow ... surely he wouldn't want to do that? Maybe that's not what was intended to be conveyed, but that would be a horrible thing to do to a work of art such as this.
