In February, The Oklahoman and the Tulsa World collaborated on a series of stories about residential care homes and intermediate facilities for the mentally retarded. Reporters from the two newspapers spent about six months studying more than 40,000 records from local, state and federal agencies, and found among other things that the background checks conducted on the people who work in those facilities aren’t always as thorough or accurate as they should be.
