Purcell senior Dominique Gavia is entering his third year as a starter. The 5-foot-9, 190-pound running back hopes to get the Dragons back to the playoffs in coach Greg Willis' first season.
Q: Being a senior, have you taken on a leadership role?
A: Yeah, definitely. I remember what it's like to be younger and look up to the older guys. Now, I'm the older guy, so I'm hoping the young guys look up to me as that leader.
You've got a new coach (Greg Willis), how's the transition been?
A lot of the stuff we're working on we knew already. I think that will allow us to be pretty strong from the start, and help us go out and execute well. It's mostly things that we've done over the past couple of years. I like it a lot.
Anyone on the schedule you're especially looking forward to playing?
Yeah, that's definitely Plainview and Madill.
Why those teams?
I think because they're a couple of the top teams in the district. And Madill was a close one last year. They beat us last second, so definitely want to get them back.
What are some of the goals you guys have set this season?
We're going to take it one step at a time. We want to try and win the district, make it far in the playoffs. And if we've got a shot at state, go get that.
What are your plans after high school?
I'm not sure yet. Hopefully I can have a good season so I can get some looks to go and play football somewhere.
