UPDATE: Cushing man dies after Payne County pursuit
A pursuit in Payne County ended when a man was found in a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. His death is being investigated as a suicide, OSBI says.
PERKINS — A man who led Payne County law enforcement officers on a pursuit near Perkins died of what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported Wednesday.
A Payne County sheriff's deputy said he began pursuing a vehicle driven by a man later identified as Clinton Craig Blakely, 27, of Cushing, when the vehicle ran a red light about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday five miles east of Perkins on State Highway 33.
OSBI indicated the driver refused to stop, so the deputy and a Perkins police officer set up a roadblock and ordered him to get out his pickup. The driver slowed the pickup, then drove toward the deputy.
The deputy fired several times at the truck's tires, which stopped the vehicle.
Officers approached the pickup and saw the driver had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. A gun was found in the cab of the vehicle. The driver was taken to a Stillwater hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The medical examiner will make the official determination of the cause and manner of his death.
