As the Putnam City North Panthers prepared for their first game, I sat down with junior quarterback Chase Sparks to discuss the upcoming season. Sparks and the Panthers take on the Putnam City Pirates Friday at Putnam City Stadium. Kickoff is 7.

Evan O’Brien: You led the JV squad to an undefeated record last year. How do you plan on using that to help you in your first year starting on varsity?

Chase Sparks: “The experience I got from that, will help me this year. That and the time I got on varsity last year.”

EO: What was the transition from (offensive coordinator Scott) Burger to (Rod) Richardson like? What are some things you like or dislike?

CS: “I like him [Richardson], a lot more. He coaches more and he pushes all of us to be our best. Overall, I like him better as a coach.”

EO: You played behind John Robert Simon last year, and even got some playing time throughout the year. What are some of the things you learned from him that will help benefit for this year?

CS: “To get all nerves out was really great. Getting in there was useful and I just have to go out there and keep shaking all of the nerves out of my system before the game.”

EO: Since this week is Battle of the Expressway, what kind of mindset do you have to have to get the victory?

CS: “We just have to stay focused on our offense and do what we do. We have to not worry about who we play this week.”

EO: What are your expectations for the season? What would you say would be a “successful” season?

CS: “Anything over .500 is a successful season. We just want to make the playoffs this year.”
