— The image of her body crumpled on the ground after tripping over a hurdle at the Class 6A state track meet last spring serves as a reminder of how badly Schuyler Wood wants to win.

But the photograph isn’t necessarily a motivational tool. Wood already has all the motivation she needs.

“She’s one of the most self-motivated, mature athletes I’ve ever been around,” Putnam City track coach Adam Helms said. “She knows her craft and is educated about it. Her motivation is simple. She wants to get better each and every week.”

Wood is a two-time champion in the long jump, and was the only girl in the state to go over 19 feet last year. And she’s a two-time runner-up in the high jump.

She thought she might be able to grab gold in the high jump last year, but after her fall in the hurdles on the first day of the meet, the injuries held her back in the high jump on the final day.

“I was tearing up in between jumps,” she said. “I really want to win the high jump this year.”

Wood will be back in the hurdles again, hoping to break the 15-second mark in the 100-meter race.
