Q&A on Collecting

Q: Enclosed you will find a photo of our grandfather clock. It was made by the Howard Miller Clock Company, and we bought it new in November 2001. It was the previous year model and we paid $1,100 for it, rather than $2,200 for the current model. The wood is walnut and stands 81 inches tall. It has Westminster chimes, three heavy weights and a huge pendulum. It has reeded columns, beveled glass and a swan neck pediment. We had it cleaned and oiled this past spring, and it keeps excellent time. It is an 80th edition anniversary clock and is in excellent condition. Could you please tell how much it is worth in today's market?

A: The Howard Miller Clock Company was founded in 1937 in Zeeland, Mich. It started out making wall clocks and mantel clocks, and, in 1960, the company introduced a line of grandfather clocks. Kieninger in the Black Forest, Germany, made the movement. They celebrated 80 years of making clock movements in 2002, thus the 80th-anniversary edition. Currently, grandfather clocks garner only modest value on the secondary market and sell in the range of $700 to $1,000. New grandfather clocks like yours are selling between $3,000 to $5,000. Replacement or insurance value would be in the range of $3,000 to $5,000.

Q: I inherited a porcelain vase with this mark on the bottom. The vase stands about 32 inches tall, and it is in mint condition. It is decorated with an image of a young woman in a full-length gown. To her right is a bird, and she is looking away from it. Above her head are applied leaves and grapes, and the base is decorated with cherubs.
