On the decision to name true freshman Wes Lunt the starting quarterback:

“It was unanimous with our staff.

“Some 18-year-olds act like they're 13. Some 18-year-olds act like they're 23. He's so much more mature.

“He has a very accurate arm, he's got a calm demeanor like Brandon (Weeden) … and he just gets it. He just has something about him, and I don't want to wait two years to figure it out.

“With J.W. (Walsh as the starter), we'd have to change what we do. He's a runner who's developing as a thrower.

“The hardest part (of naming the starter) was telling the other two guys. … I'm not that thick-skinned.”

On the expectations for Lunt to become a leader in 2012:

“You can't ask him to be something he's not, but he can't just be a kid.”

On what “keeps him up at night” as a coach:

“Last year I was miserable. When you don't have success, you feel like you could have done it better … you could have coached them better.

“It was rewarding at the end of the year, because you put so much pressure (on yourself), because you only have so many opportunities with a really good team.
