Q&A: Tennessee Titans safety Markelle Martin recovering from surgery

It's uncertain how Martin injured his knee, but he first noticed the pain after the Senior Bowl, weeks before the NFL Combine in February.

Martin should have an opportunity to make the roster but currently is on the physically unable to perform list. Martin is listed on the depth chart behind returning starters Michael Griffin and Jordan Babineaux, third-year pro Robert Johnson and veteran Aaron Francisco.

Q: Has it been frustrating to wait to compete for a job?

A: You have to look at it as a blessing in disguise. I get a chance to rehab my knee the right way and study the playbook. It's an opportunity to digest the information and learn it. I'm getting a lot of extra time in one-on-one (film) work.

How did the injury happen?

I'm not really sure. I was doing a drill and it kind of went out on me. It's one of those deals it might have been built up from the whole season and finally gave out, or it could have been abrupt. I think it was one of those freak accidents.

Why did it take several months to diagnose you needed arthroscopic surgery?

I think I might have come back a little too early and I was pushing it. Ultimately in the end, it kind of backfired on me. I started getting better and then I kind of hit a wall. They made a choice to go in and make sure everything was OK. In the process, they found out I had torn a little piece of my meniscus. It was a good thing that they went in and looked. I probably would have had a more severe injury if I had kept going.
