MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Joel Stave will get a late start in spring practice to stave off the competition for the Wisconsin starting quarterback job.

The incumbent will be limited through the early part of camp after hurting his right shoulder in the Capital One Bowl on New Year's Day. Coach Gary Andersen said Wednesday that it was just a precaution.

Stave will limited in practice until spring break, which begins next week. Then the Badgers will determine whether he can be a full go once spring drills resume March 25. Andersen says Stave would play if there was a game tomorrow.

For now, Bart Houston, Tanner McEvoy and D.J. Gillins were among those sharing quarterback reps. McEvoy in particular looked good for someone who is returning to quarterback after playing safety last year.
