Quoteboard on the death of OU football legend Lee Roy Selmon

COMPILED BY MIKE BALDWIN AND JOHN HELSLEY, Staff Writers,; Published: September 4, 2011

SCOTT HILL (OU defensive back (1973-76)

“Lee Roy Selmon is the epitome of a football player, gentleman, teammate and captain to all of us who played with him. He is the ideal Oklahoma football player. Lee Roy set the standard for all players that played with him and came after him.”

LARRY LACEWELL (former OU defensive coordinator)

“One of the highlights of my career, I called everybody in the room to watch, was Lee Roy being inducted into the (Pro) Hall of Fame. I couldn't go. We were in Dallas. I was busy. He started thanking people, and I was one of the people he thanked. Trust me, it's the other way around.”

BARRY SWITZER (former OU coach)

“We've got three Heismans over there, but I think (the Selmons) are the first family of Oklahoma football.”

RANDY HUGHES (OU defensive back 1972-74)

“Lee Roy had all that success and fame in pro and college, but he played in an age before we really lifted weights. You didn't really have a strength program. Lee Roy and Dewey never lifted weights in college. Can you imagine if he lifted weights since junior high like they do now, what he would have been like?”

MIKE VAUGHAN (OU offensive tackle 1974-76)

“I don't think there was any finer a player that ever played at OU. And he was such a class character.”

JOHN ROUSH (OU guard 1972-74)

“Most of all, he was so kindhearted and showed respect for everybody. He had the biggest smile you could ever imagine. Dewey, the same thing. Him and Dewey were awesome. All of them are family to me. They were in Tulsa a year ago signing autographs. I went over there, and they all hugged me. It was so unbelievable to play with people like that. I love them all.”
