Rain, flooding wash out Smokies roads and bridge
GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) — Recent heavy rains and flooding have washed out roads and a pedestrian bridge in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
According to a news release from the park, closed areas include parts of Greenbrier Road, Cataloochee Road and Parson's Branch Road.
Park crews estimate it will take until the end of March to replace damaged culverts, regrade roads and pour new gravel.
A 70-foot-long pedestrian bridge across Walker Camp Prong also was destroyed. Trail crews do not yet know how long that will take to replace.
The park received more than 4 inches of rain in 24 hours on Jan. 30, flooding streams that were already swollen from higher than normal precipitation. The park averages 5 to 7 inches of rain in January but received 14 to17 inches this year.
