Ersland was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison for the May 2009 shooting death of Antwun Parker in which prosecutors say Ersland was justified when he shot Parker and knocked him unconscious. But prosecutors say Ersland went too far when he eventually picked up a second handgun and shot Parker five more times.
A jury rejected Ersland's claims of self-defense and convicted him of murder.
Ersland is appealing the conviction.
