ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Rams have signed defensive end Vernon Gholston, the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft but so far a bust in the NFL.

The Rams announced the signing Wednesday night on their Twitter feed. The team also brought in Andre Carter for a workout.

Gholston had no sacks in three seasons with the New York Jets, who tried to convert him to an outside linebacker. He did not play last season after getting released by the Chicago Bears in late August.

The Rams could use some depth at defensive end behind starters Chris Long and Robert Quinn. Long was the second overall pick in 2009.

St. Louis had a roster spot open after trading cornerback Josh Gordy, who was traded to the Colts for a draft pick Tuesday.
