Teddy Bear Paws

2 packages yeast

1/3 cup warm water

1 teaspoon sugar

1 cup sugar

1 cup Crisco (butter flavor)

1 tablespoon salt

4 eggs

8 cups flour

2 cups very warm water

Additional flour for rolling out

½ cup melted butter

1 cup sugar

1 (8-ounce) can or tube of almond paste


Slivered almonds

Frosting (see below)

Making dough

Dissolve yeast in 1/3 cup warm water with 1 teaspoon sugar and set aside. Measure flour and set aside.

Mix shortening, sugar and salt together. Add eggs and yeast mixture. Mix well.

Add flour 1 cup at a time alternately with warm water. Dough will be very sticky but satiny in appearance. Turn into oiled bowl and cover and let rise until double. This dough rises well overnight in the refrigerator and is suited well to rolling out in the morning.


Work dough down, divide in half and roll out in a large rectangle ¼ inch thick. The rectangle will be about 18 inches by 28 inches. Spread with half of the melted butter and sugar and crumple half of the almond paste onto the surface before sprinkling with cinnamon.
