EL RENO — Richard Williams set a state record for largest flathead catfish Tuesday at El Reno Lake. Williams, who recently started fishing again, had a 78-pound, 8-ounce catch while bass fishing with a crankbait. The previous flathead record was a 76-pounder from the Poteau River near Wister. Although Williams said he does not fish for cat, he admitted the record catch was "pretty cool.” Williams caught the 51-inch catfish on 14-pound test line rigged with a Strike King crank bait. Williams caught the fish on rod and reel, though many anglers use May and June to noodle (catching with the hands) for catfish. Flathead cat often head for cover in shallow water to build nests. For a complete list of record fish and the procedures regarding certifying state record fish, consult the current Oklahoma Fishing Guide or log on to wildlifedepartment.com. Anglers who believe they might have hooked a record fish must weigh the fish on an Oklahoma State Department of Agriculture certified scale, and the weight must be verified by a Wildlife Department employee.
