PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine utility companies are making progress as they restore electric service to customers who lost power when strong winds buffeted the state.

Central Maine Power and Bangor Hydro Electric Company said Friday afternoon that they'd reduced the number of power outages to fewer than 2,000. All told, more than 100,000 homes and businesses in Maine lost power at some point during Thursday's wind storm.

The National Weather Service says winds have gusted to 63 mph in Bath, 57 mph in Turner, 54 mph in Augusta and 49 mph in Portland. Offshore, it hit 74 mph at Matinicus Rock.
