Recruiting quoteboard: How much do coaches affect college choices?

John Michael McGee, who is committed to OU, says the departure of Wade McWhorter at Texas made him lose interest to the school. But he says his interest in the Sooners wasn't dependent on the coaches.

Oklahoma running back commit David Smith

“Coach (Cale) Gundy is a great guy, keeps it 100 percent real and I feel he will always be truthful with me but, no, it didn't have an impact on my decision. Coaches change all the time in this business. I simply saw a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at OU, which has been one of my favorite college teams growing up – from learning of Marcus Dupree and even talking to Tashard Choice about his experience at OU before he transferred. I'm just busting my butt every day for me and my family, and I will continue to do the same at Oklahoma. But don't get me wrong, Coach Gundy being the guy he is definitely put the icing on the cake for me.”

Oklahoma State tight end-defensive end commit Zac Veatch

“Everybody's going to pretty much have the same nice facilities and all that, but I think the decision ultimately comes down to people and how I'm going to fit in with everybody. It wasn't just (offensive line coach Joe Wickline that I liked). I loved Coach (Mike) Gundy and all the other coaches, too. It's just great there.”

ESPN national recruiting director Tom Luginbill

“I always say, ‘Would you be happy at this school tomorrow if you couldn't play football anymore?' That's always a smart way to look at things, even if it's rarely done. You're making a life choice, beyond a coach and beyond football, even.”

Oklahoma offensive line commit John Michael McGee

“Coach Mac McWhorter at Texas was a great guy. I really was building a relationship with him, but after he left I lost interest in that school rather quickly. Coach (Josh) Heupel and Coach (James) Patton are phenomenal men. My relationship with them definitely influenced my decision. However, if either of them would have left, it wouldn't have mattered. I'm tied to the program more than the coaches.”
