Spokesman Rusty Surette said volunteers are assisting four adults and 12 children who were affected by a blaze at an Oklahoma City apartment complex. A parent and five children were living in the unit where the fire started, he said.

Firefighters were called to a fire at a two-story apartment complex at 1182 W Hefner Road about 10:30 p.m., Oklahoma City Fire Department spokeswoman Janice Pulliam said. Smoke was coming from a first-floor apartment, she said.

A security guard removed five children from the building, Pulliam said.

The children were examined by paramedics but did not have any injuries, Pulliam said. She said the guard was treated for smoke inhalation and released.

Pulliam said the estimated damage to the building is about $20,000.

She said firefighters haven't determined how or where the fire started.
