Red Earth announces winners of 2014 adult art competition

Red Earth kickstarted its 2014 art market Thursday with the announcement of all the winners in its exciting adult fine art competition. The art market will remain open until 7 p.m. Saturday at Red Earth’s new Remington Park venue.

The Red Earth President’s Award, which includes a medallion and a $1,000 cash prize, was presented to jewelry artist Nelda Stirrup, a Pheasant Rump Nakota, for her entry, “Bandolier.”

Cherokee artist Karin Walkingstick, of Claremore, won the Kathleen Upshaw Award for her pottery, “Birds of a Feather.” The award includes a medallion and $750 cash prize.

Also announced Thursday was the Grand Award for best in show, which was presented to Caddo artist Chase Kahwinhut Earles, of Ada, for his large pottery bowl, “Kahwis Bahbateno (Red River Bowl).” The Grand Award includes a medallion and a $1,500 prize.

Art winners in 14 other categories were honored during the AT&T Red Earth Adult Art Awards ceremony. First-place winners in each category received $500; second place, $300; and third, $100. Those artists and their winning artworks were as follows:


•First, Mary Aitson, (Cherokee), “Vines of Tradition.”

•Second, Vivian Garner-Cottrell, (Cherokee), “Trade Basket.”

•Third, Ronda Talbert Moss, (Cherokee), “Nestled Together.”


•First, Connie Yellowman, “Beaded Medallion.”

•Second, Les Berryhill, (Creek), “Beaded Fish — The One That Got Away.”

•Third, Yonavea Hawkins, (Caddo Delaware), “Hasinay Princess.”

Clothing, Textiles, Weaving

•First, Tahnee Ahtone Harjo, (Muscogee-Creek), “Growing Thunder Dress.”

•Second, Tyra Shackleford, “Fingerwoven Belt with Beads.”

•Third, Refina Canyon, (Cherokee), “Two Gray Hills.”

Cultural Items, Utilitarian

•First, Jim Van Deman, (Delaware), “American Indian Flute.”

•Second, Paul Hacker, (Choctaw), “Knife.”

•Third, Vivian Garner-Cottrell, (Cherokee), “Serving Basket.”
