The death of a Red Earth Festival board member was announced during Saturday night's competition.

Dr. Mark Allen Everett, 78, a dermatologist and art collector from Oklahoma City, died Saturday of cancer, friends said.

Everett was director of dermatology at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine from 1979 to 1996.

Friends said Everett was an avid supporter of the Red Earth Festival and supported local artists every chance he could. Everett hosted musical quartets that traveled from overseas, and he loved opera and ballet.

He was known to buy local art and donate it to OU and the Governor's Mansion. He started a fund to provide scholarships to students in performing arts, said Lela Sullivan, a close friend.

"He seemed to have a mission of contributing to young artists," said Sullivan, who volunteered with Everett at Red Earth.

Betty Price, another friend and executive director of the Oklahoma Arts Council, said Everett was a true Renaissance man.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
