MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Public Service Board is looking into how to implement a new state law that could result in energy efficiency money being used for things that increase electrical usage.

A new law allows the board to authorize the use of funds raised from the energy efficiency charge paid by electric customers to be used for things like air-source or geothermal heat pumps.

Those devices may actually increase electrical usage, but the law says they could be paid for with efficiency funds if they make economic sense for consumers and reduce the state's overall energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

There's no word on when the board might rule on the matter.
