With Duke of Mischief arriving at Remington Park late Wednesday afternoon, all nine horses scheduled to run in Sunday’s $400,000 Oklahoma Derby, presented by News 9, are in Oklahoma City. Post position for the Derby is today. Either Massone or Kelly Leak is expected to be the morning-line favorite. Kelly Leak, trained by Michael Machowsky, has been at Remington for more than a week while Massone, trained by Hall of Famer Ron McAnally, arrived Wednesday morning. Trainer Steve Asmussen will have two horses in the race that will be ridden by brothers. Zion will be ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan. Jermaine Bridgmohan will be the jockey for Retap. Sunday’s races begin at 1:30 p.m.Comments
KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER WON’T RUNKentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird will not run in Sunday’s race. It is the first time ever that a Derby winner has been nominated for the Oklahoma Derby. Instead, Mine That Bird will remain in California, preparing the Breeders’ Cup Championships.
OAKS BRINGING IN BIG NAMESThe Oklahoma Derby isn’t the only big race at Remington on Sunday. The $200,000 Remington Park Oaks and the $150,000 Remington Green Stakes will also take place. It is possible the Larry Jones-trained Payton d’Oro will be competing in the Oaks race for fillies. Payton d’Oro won the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes race in May. Remington’s all-time leading trainer, Donnie Von Hemel, might have Peach Brew run in the race as well. Post position for both races will be today. 2004 Oklahoma Derby winner Wally’s Choice will run in the Remington Green Stakes.
