Oklahoma State football: Cowboys offense, kickers get average marks in spring scrimmage

The OSU defense shined Saturday in the Orange-White scrimmage, and the grades reflect it.

Ball security: C. The quarterbacks combined for three interceptions, though one was thrown by sixth-teamer Cody Peterson, and the teams did combine for 95 passes. But more troubling were the five fumbles. Turnovers can kill a season.

Quinn Sharp replacements: C. The OSU kicking game remains a work in progress. The two kickoffs were acceptable – Kip Smith popped his into the end zone; Bobby Stonebraker's reached the 2-yard line. But the punting was just so-so. Without a rush or threat of return, Smith's five kicks averaged 41.6 yards and Michael Reichenstein's three averaged 42.7. Stonebraker made a 25-yard field goal but missed from 29 yards. None of that is close to the standard set by Sharp.

Pass coverage: A. Few Cowboy receivers ran free. The deep balls, especially, were well-covered; two of OSU's longer pass plays came on trick plays. Cornerback Ashton Lampkin and safety Deion Imade each had three pass breakups.

Format: A. The splitting of the squad into two equitable teams made for a quality scrimmage. Competitive, game-like, void of confusion. It wasn't easy, with a limited number of offensive linemen, but Gundy's staff pulled it off and made for a good day for fans.
