Report: Daredevil movie rights to return to Marvel/Disney

by Matthew Price Published: April 23, 2013

According to a report from Deadline, the movie rights to the comic-book character Daredevil have reverted from Fox to Marvel/Disney.   According to the site, Marvel’s Kevin Feige is confirming this in interviews for “Iron Man 3.”

Daredevil in the Marvel Comics universe is the alter-ego of blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who gained extra-sensory powers when he was blinded as a young man.  The character was created by Stan Lee, but the character became more popular following writer-artist Frank Miller’s darker take on the character in the early 1980s.

In recent years, writers including Kevin Smith, Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker have handled the character.  Mark Waid’s current run on the character has been well-reviewed and award-winning.

Fox made the 2003 film “Daredevil,” starring Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Colin Farrell.  Director Joe Carnahan had been attached to the last Fox attempt to make a “Daredevil” film.

Disney, which now owns Marvel, will have the opportunity to integrate Daredevil into the larger Marvel universe of films, through either appearances in other Marvel films or perhaps another solo effort.
