Repurpose Southern Oklahoma Resource Center

Published: September 9, 2013

As a lifelong, elderly, resident of Pauls Valley, I grew up in the time when what is now the campus of the Southern Oklahoma Resource Center functioned under the title of “State Training School for Boys.” For many years, this valuable institution provided a place where boys who had made mistakes could come, learn a trade and have the opportunity to develop and mature, physically and emotionally, in a healthy environment, returning to society as contributing members. Today, SORC is in the process of gradually closing, and there's discussion as to the possible future use of the campus. Could it be timely to revisit the idea of a state training school for boys, giving some of our young offenders the chance for rehabilitation rather than incarceration?
