A plan to keep the OSU Medical Center operating in Tulsa hasn’t been finalized, although the framework for a deal is in place and it appears to be one that satisfies all parties.

Gov. Brad Henry announced the tentative agreement last week, following meetings that involved him, his chief negotiator Scott Meacham, the leaders of the state House and Senate, and representatives of St. John Medical Center and Ardent Health Services. Ardent owns OSU Medical Center; St. John had previously come up with a proposal to run the hospital and continue training OSU doctors-in-training.
Henry’s announcement was short on details, but he did say it would keep the hospital open, preserve the residency program and address health care challenges in the Tulsa area. That’s vitally important, as OSU Medical Center handles the bulk of indigent care in that part of the state.
Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor says the city would be willing to take title to the hospital and use a public trust to help fund it. That aspect has to appeal to legislative leaders who were understandably opposed to the idea of the state taking ownership, opposition we have shared.
The state reportedly will provide a subsidy that diminishes in time, and will provide earlier-promised funding for capital improvements at the hospital. When all is said and done, House Speaker Chris Benge said, "The OSU Medical Center will stay open and provide indigent care for the poor and house the residence program.” That’s a win-win-win, and all those involved in making it happen deserve credit.
