Research gun issue

Oklahoman Published: February 3, 2013

In response to Larry Bereman (Your Views, Jan. 27): The anti-gun movement has used lies and misinformation as a means of promoting the fear of these inanimate objects. Automatic weapons have been banned since 1934. The weapons that were unlawfully obtained and illegally used in recent mass shootings were semi-automatic weapons (one shot for each trigger pull). Millions of semi-automatic weapons are now in the hands of many law-abiding citizens. The size of the magazine (not “the clip”) is irrelevant. If these inanimate objects are so evil, then (using a liberal's rationale) we should have the mass bloodshed of millions being reported right now.

These weapons, in responsible hands, are safe. Liberals rely on fear and the lack of education on this topic to punish law-abiding citizens. Are they so naive as to believe criminals won't be able to obtain guns illegally? And as cliche as the National Rifle Association's argument has become, it's true. Drugs have been illegal for decades, yet we have a massive drug problem in this country. Drunken driving has been illegal for decades, yet numerous lives are taken each year by drunk drivers. I'd encourage people to educate themselves before buying into the pro-gun or anti-gun arguments. Don't allow the rights of law-abiding citizens to be trampled due to ignorance.
