Researchers keep eyes on prize

Last month, John McCain proposed that America offer a prize of $300 million —$1 for each American — to the inventor of a battery so powerful and compact that it would eliminate the need for fossil fuels.

Predictably, Barack Obama derided the offer as a stunt, an election-year quick fix. Yet on Obama's Web site, he, too, advances the notion of a prize for advances in ethanol research.
