WILBURTON — John F. Medders was declared the winner today — by six votes — of the Latimer County District 2 County Commissioner post following a recount of votes cast in the Aug. 26 runoff. The office has been vacant since the death in March of previous District 2 Commissioner Gearl Johnson.
Each candidate gained two votes in the recount, but the hand count of all the ballots cast in the Democratic race left Medders, 65, of Buffalo Valley, six votes ahead of Rayford Bratcher, 30, of Yanush. Medders led the runoff 497-491, and had 499 votes following the recount, with 493 votes cast for Bratcher. The re-tally was conducted in the Latimer County district courtroom by four county election board precinct workers. There are no Republican candidates. Marion Fry, assistant district attorney, said the results were certified today as official. Paul Sund, spokesman for Gov. Brad Henry, said today that Medders will appointed to the post as soon as paperwork from the county election board is received, and will serve out the remainder of Johnson’s term. Medders then will begin a full term in January.
