WILBURTON — John F. Medders was declared the winner today — by six votes — of the Latimer County District 2 County Commissioner post following a recount of votes cast in the Aug. 26 runoff. The office has been vacant since the death in March of previous District 2 Commissioner Gearl Johnson.

Each candidate gained two votes in the recount, but the hand count of all the ballots cast in the Democratic race left Medders, 65, of Buffalo Valley, six votes ahead of Rayford Bratcher, 30, of Yanush. Medders led the runoff 497-491, and had 499 votes following the recount, with 493 votes cast for Bratcher.

The re-tally was conducted in the Latimer County district courtroom by four county election board precinct workers.

There are no Republican candidates.

Marion Fry, assistant district attorney, said the results were certified today as official. Paul Sund, spokesman for Gov. Brad Henry, said today that Medders will appointed to the post as soon as paperwork from the county election board is received, and will serve out the remainder of Johnson’s term. Medders then will begin a full term in January.

At one time, all the election boards were basically extensions of Stipe's law firm. Just the absentee ballots alone were all processed through a notary at the Stipe Law Firm. Kayln Free was elected by a landslide of absentee ballots. All were processed by the same notary who is a legal clerk at the Stipe Law Firm. The signature were legit because state Democratic Party volunteers went door to door to get people to sign them. They then turned in the signed ballots to the notary who then turned them over to party members to fill out and then send off to the court house. All neat and wrapped up like a Christmas gift. A few voter fraud convictions have put a dent in this activity but it still happens in pockets mainly in deep SE Oklahoma. Democracy is just a buzz word like a club to which you belong. Democratic Party is something they throw each October at the county fairground where free beer, bbq, and Pete's Italian food is served. Most people have no idea what a Republican is down there. They are not even aware of the term as schools never use the word. Its a totally foreign term to those people.
